And it looks like I'm not alone in that aspect. Seems that there are a lot of "guests" at any given time in comparison to "members". I'm thinking that members are not logging in like they used to???

Just an observation, don't mean anything by it one way or another.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I seem to remember Craig saying the the "guest" list now includes folks viewing the wiki part of the site, as well as hearth articles, galleries, etc but did not before?

If so, that would explain why it is high.

Another possibility is that they forgot their password and didn't go through the password re-set process.

The visitors have always outnumbered the logged in members by orders of magnitude. It is just that the numbers are now up high on the page instead of buried down at the bottom. The idea of the place is that folks from all over the web can find information. Not necessarily that they become members. Most forums limit search etc.to members. Not us baby. Get on here, find info and click on a few ads along the way to pay the rent.

In my case, twice now I have written a contribution to a thread, hit "Post Reply", had a pop-up say I did not have authority to post. Then I lost the draft when clicked the x on the pop-up. However, I have been able to post a one or two line comment to a thread successfully.

I am interested if this posts. If there is a word limit or other change, please point me to the guidelines.

Which forum room were you in when you tried to post the replies that didn't work?

I had that happen once then I realized that I was no longer "logged on." After a certain amount of time I think you are "automatically logged off" and when you go to reply, you get that message.

I log into the forums, I read, I post, whatever...then I walk away from my computer for a while. When I come back, there's the forum...I'm still there, but I'm no longer logged in as a member. I don't know what that idle time is that kicks me out...maybe 30 minutes or so? Dunno. Anyway, if I don't notice that I'm no longer logged in as a member, and I try to post, I'll get that message saying that I'm not authorized. Just a thought.

There is a box you can click at the bottom of the log in to keep you logged in. I logged in the last time over a week ago and I shut the computer down every night and am still logged in when I fire it up the next morning.

Thanks all for the information. Does anyone know how long the initial period of login might be? I may not be able to permanently login.

Jim, start a conversation with Webbie, he'll get you fixed up if you are having login or password problems.

I'm not sure how long it is set - but I can probably set it longer than the default.

We cannot compare the stats from this forum to the last for a few reasons. The last one would report users pretty much ANYWHERE on the site, since I use the same framework for the wiki, qa, articles, fuel price guide and forum. The new forum is ONLY the forum, and does not keep track of the rest of the site.

Also, we intentionally set the move to be when our traffic slows down....greatly! So we expect fewer people to login - and the really warm March in the northeast would also affect that.

Also, since the search feature is much better on the new forum, guests can often get what they need without registering or logging in - so there is a lot of differences.

We are keeping track of the big picture and I will probably send out some bulk emails at the beginning of next season to users who have not checked back in.....to remind them (or give them reason) to check back in...

Realistically, a lot of people look forward to the spring and yard work, etc. and have probably checked out...whereas if the snow was falling, they'd be hanging a bit longer.
