my house is 24x40 ranch with a walkout celler. Which equals about 960 sq feet per floor for a total of 1920 sq. feet. The house is about 20 years old so it is insulated pretty well, but the celler is only insulated on the walkout end. Now you know about my house it seems the 2 sizes for wood stoves in my size range would be a 1800 or 2200 sq foot stove. The one thing I have noticed was most of the 1800 ft stove the wood can only be put in side to side where as 2200 ft stoves you can put the wood in end first. Also afraid the 1800's wouldn't hold enough wood to last all night. Thanks ahead of time because so far you guys have done a good job of answering my questions.

I take it your installing the stove in the cellar? If so go with the bigger stove like a 3cu ft fire box, you will need the extra capacity to get more heat upstairs.

...and if you need to move a lot heat, a convective stove will work better (as I have learned from experience!).

There are 2 and 3 cu ft stoves that load north/south. You'll probably want a 3 cu ft stove if the stove location is somewhat central in an open basement floorplan that has a central open staircase to the 1st floor. But if the basement floor is connected to the first floor by a narrow staircase at one end, then stove probably will be ineffective as a whole house heater.
