Question:

We have a direct vent gas stove in our basement that was installed with a snorkel kit. The draw is so strong (it's located on the west side of our house) that it pulls the flames up the vent. Usually, the flames are blue and carbon monoxide builds up in the room, especially when it's cold or windy. Do you have any suggestions for us?

Answer:

Sounds like there is a need for either an air shutter adjustment or a "restrictor" plate. This plate comes with certain stoves and is designed to reduce the draft in situations like yours. This should be done by someone with technical know-how and only after you have checked with the manufacturer about the problem and they approved the solution.
