Most of you don't know anything about anything so I rarely look for advice around here, but, evidently there's a decomp button my MS440. What's it for?

Big Red, it,s a jake brake

I guess you never had a nicely set up 2-cycle dirt bike. :)

geez...when u get the saw stuck in wood..push it..it will come right out

I have a 2000 KTM 380EXC (2 stroke) with no decomp, and a 1994 Honda XR600R (air cooled 4 stroke) WITH a decomp lever which I've never used

It's there for after you either remove the base gasket or cut the squish band and port the piston/cylinder. At 150 or 160lbs. of compression for an able bodied young sawyer, it has no real use.

I don't even know what a MS440 is, but if you read page 35 of the owner's manual it explains that it opens the decompression valve.
It's the starting the engine instructions page so it must be a engine starting aid.

My puny little o26pro has one, and I've found the engine starts fine without pushing it in before pulling the pull cord. Why they bother putting one on such a girlie-man saw I don't know, but there it is.

:)

pictures would help

Sweet. I don't mod saws and I plan to be dead by 50 so I'll never need it.

remove it, plug with appropriate size screw and sell decomp on ebay.....it's the American way!

Smarmy answers aside, I believe it is used to add a little air when the piston fires, which is especially good when you are trying to clear a flood.

Hey I think that I need one of those on my lawnmower. Doh!

...because there's just not enough smarmy answers....I dont know much about saws, but in the Casino Gambling world, a comp is something they give you for free when you are either a big winner, or big loser....a de-comp, would probably be when they take something away that they gave you for free, like a steak dinner... "you give that steak dinner back sir!"

Just the opposite, it bleeds off some compression (air/fuel charge) to keep it from firing early and ripping the starter cord out of your hand.

Oops, my bad. Chemo brain.

And all this time, I've been using these "de-comp" buttons as kill switches. Now I wonder, how the heck am I gonna turn my saws off?
