Surpisingly large poplar at my rear entrance

Must be 4-5 feet across at the base- sorry for the poor quality picture. The houses around here are only 60 yrs old. This tree must pre-date that. Anyone venture a guess on the age?

Or bore it w/ an increment borer if you can get a long enough one from your local college. Actually I doubt they'd loan it out...but maybe they'd be interested in boring it.

There seem to be many factors in how fast a tree grows. I've seen yard maples with growth rings over a half inch apart. It was probably over a spring or something.
