This is an interesting report on the actual facts in the hot coffee spill lawsuit against McDonalds. It's an interesting lesson in how seriously wrong the media can get the facts and how this it can become urban legend.

 
I followed that case back when it occurred and over the years. What they don't address in the video, for fear of getting sued by McDonald's, is the high degree of arrogance in front of those jurors by McDonald's management, their council and their "expert" witnesses at that trial. THAT is what triggered the punitive damage award. That jury wanted to slap the crap out of McDonald's for that show.
 
Yes, that seems to be implied by the fact that she tried a couple times to settle very modestly before they insisted on a trial. What is most interesting is how the story got distorted along the way until the urban legend had little resemblance to the actual case or facts.
