This has to be the most dangerous way to chop wood i have ever seen

I wouldn't be worried about the wedge coming off the wheel, that was welded ask the way around. I would be worried about the wheel itself coming apart.

Wow! That is the most lethal one we have seen here yet. He looks terrified in the video.
 
Ouch!! My hand hurt when that first split fell off.
