PITTSFIELD -- A newly installed pellet stove is to blame for a small house fire on Benedict Road on Wednesday night, according to local fire officials.

Shortly after 8 p.m., the Pittsfield Fire Department responded to a minor fire at the Golden residence at 187 Benedict Road. Firefighters discovered the smoke and flames behind the wall of the pellet stove on the first floor.

Deputy Fire Chief Bruce Kilmer said the heating unit was improperly installed, causing the blaze. Firefighters extinguished the fire in 10 minutes.

No injuries were reported.
