How to you clean off and are of the wood stove to prepare for touch up paint. Is mineral spirits okay? I have a steel plate stove with buck Paint. THere seems to be some type of oily residue on top of the stove. (probably from the kids somehow) I can't get it off with water and I need to do some touch up paint on scratches... Not sure if mineral spirits will breack down the paint too much. Any tricks of the trade?

Go over the area with fine steel wool, the clean and wipe with alcohol or lacquer thinner.
