I have the opportunity to take down the base of a tree (already limbed) but not sure what it is. The leaves are all but gone and the ones left are shriveled up. Can anyone help? Thanks.

My guess is some kind of oak. I get this from what looks like a shriveled up oak leaf

On the left side of the picture is some kind of metal tray, just leaning there.

It's actually a three headed beast. It's about 9 feet tall, and is pretty mangy looking.

I say go for it. Hackberry is good stuff. I would use some old chain if I were you, those ol' yardbirds ALWAYS seem to have junk in them......

I'm with them...Hackberry. The first cut and split will tell. It should be real light, almost white, wood inside. Normally easy to split. But if it's a "3 headed monster" like you said, splitting could get interesting.

I'm thinkin' Hackberry. I can't identify the leaf at all but the bark looks sort of warty, just like Hackberry.

I don't know, is anyone else thinking hard maple. Not seeing hackberry as I know it. Bark more flakey than warty??

I know what your thinking about the bark, but those dried up leaves don't look like maple. The one on the left looks like a rolled up hackberry leaf pretty good.............you have to employ a little imagination of course .

Hackberry's good stuff.Looks a bit like Elm but (normally) is much easier splitting. Is ready to go in about a year after splitting/stacking.
