Our white ash looks like this bark- I can confirm that 100%. I have seen oak with the bark shown in the OP, and since he said the wood grain looked like oak- it's good evidence.
Yea we have a Cemetery by my house that is called Oak Grove Cemetery. It has a bunch of mature Oak trees.....every one of them has the alligator like bark at the bottom of them just like the pic in the OP. Not sure exactly what Oak it is though?
