Feeling the Heat

I think I am okay with my wood supply so I decided to give my neighbors a hand today. They are goat farmers and are in the process of clearing out a 10 acre section of land that was destroyed my beavers several years ago. With all the dead trees and new undergrowth it is a slow process. They also are limited to only a couple of months a year that it is dry enough to get back there. Today we were working on a large Red Maple that had fallen down. I started at the top and was working my way down. I was right at the point where my 16" bar was not going to make it all the way through when all of a sudden the trunk jumped straight up! The root ball hand been over my head and it sat right back down like it had never fallen over. I was shocked. My wife who is usually the first one to say something finally said "I sure am glad you weren't standing on it".

The first pic is the trunk after it stood back up. Second shot is Mrs. Goat farmer who came down to check it out. She is always packing heat when she goes back there. Last pic is what we got back up to the house where he can take his time bucking and splitting it.

If you had the saw in the cut that was some scary stuff.

seems like there was just another thread where they were talking about being careful because that happens. Someone had a horrible story about a kid being in the hole at the time...

I always start cutting at the stump/butt end of the tree and work my way toward the tops. Have never had anything like that happen, without 10 feet of trunk still attached to it. BE CAREFUL!

I hate it when you gotta cut a tree down twice. Glad no one was hurt!

All my wood comes from areas I am clearing with the dozer or trails I put in and pushed the trees out and into the woods. The ones I pushed completly out and into the woods are quite dangerous to cut up. There are all kinds of stresses on the tree that are very hard to judge. I have had the trunks jump 4' sideways at times. And most times the root ball wants to fall toward you.

As quads stated, for sure on those type of trees, you always start cutting at the butt.

Nice haul.

You Tube had a vid of a tree that barber chaired. This was an eye opener for me, I didn't think they would do that. I bought a pole saw because I had a big limb come back at at me, Randy

That sometimes happens in areas where there is too much Viagra in the soil.
good one, I bet it stayed hard for more than 4 hours too, you better rush that to the wood doctor.
