Question:

Hello...We are thinking about installing a cast iron boxwood stove in our basement. We have a masonry chimney built in the middle of our home which was built in 1949 approx. We have fuel oil heating in our home for our furnace which uses this chimney. My question for you is can we also use this same chimney to install this wood stove into...use the same chimney for both kinds of heating? Thank you for helping me out with this question.

Answer:

Code authorities generally frown upon installing two different fuels into one chimney. There can be problems --for instance if the stove creates creosote and clogs up the flue then the furnace could back up into the home. Also, the chimney may not have enough capacity for both units. Best bet is to each have their own chimney.
