If it is cast iron, there will be cracks, though these can occur under normal firing condtions as well. If it is steel, the plates (sides, back, front) will be warped.
 
If in doubt, don't buy it. Better to buy new. All one has to do is realize what this box is going to do; a big fire inside your home! Don't scrimp.

well I bought it. It's a high valley 2500

4years old $300 for that price it's worth trying it. It looks like it's in great shape.

waz, I hope this works out good for you. For sure the price is low. Do a good install, burn good fuel and enjoy.
