how do you tell if a stove has been overfired?

If it is cast iron, there will be cracks, though these can occur under normal firing condtions as well. If it is steel, the plates (sides, back, front) will be warped.

Sometimes it is hard to tell. One of the telltale signs is that the paint has been turned ashen. This gives a whitish appearance in the area of overheating. Warping, broken welds and cracks can also be an indication of overfiring, but not always.
