Question:

Is it possible to purchase ventless gas logs to use in a free standing wood fireplace that are safe?

Answer:

The definition for a "free standing wood fireplace" is not clear. If you have a woodstove of any sort, the answer if probably no. If it is truly a free-standing fireplace with a large open fire box that meets all the size requirements shown in the vent-free log specs, then possibly. I, however, have never yet run into this case. Check it out with the log manufacturer.

Of course, you can buy freestanding fireplaces with vent-free logs already installed. In this case, the unit have been tested and approved for such use.
