We have a Vermont Castings Vigilant that we bought in 1983 and have used as our primary heat source for all this time in cold Northern Ontario. We have been very happy with it. However, after all these years the firebox back has become slightly warped due to heat and at times the damper lever ( the one on the left side that opens and closes with the removable handle) will slip out of the closed position. Also, when we purchaced the stove we decided not to pay extra for glass doors and wonder if now it is possible to buy glass doors and replace the warped back. Modern stoves have an air flow system to help prevent soot on the glass doors and I do not believe this technology existed when the first Vigilants were made. If this is so, and we buy glass doors now (if it is even possible to do so) will we likely have a big problem with soot and constant cleaning?
We have considered buying a new wood stove but have wondered about the possibility of repairing this one and the costs. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks
