So I made a short video of my pellet stove running and the general
day to day maintenance involved. Originally made the video
for a friend of mine but couldn't email it to him because the file is too big so I uploaded it
to photobucket which means I can share it with him and you guys.
Thought it may be of interest to some here since I don't see any
other members with a St Croix pellet stove.

Here is the link. You will need sound if ya wanna hear
my half assed improv narration.

Edit: Sorry. Now I see I should have posted this in the Perfect Picture section
but this forum doesn't allow us to delete our own posts so Mods, please
move this over there. Thanks!

Great video zeta. Nice scooter and boat too!

Works fine on a Apple computer just turn up the speaker vollume

Zeta nice job I bet you are still burning it. Man when are we going to get normal weather?

Ahh worked now. First time it just linked me to a .jpeg

Thanks for the video Zeta! How much burning does it take for the glass to end up that dirty (No offense!)

That glass wouldn't even get dirty if she was burning Mrs.GVA's special fuel.BTW do you have a dog?

Zeta.... the secret is IAMS ...

Thats one werid pellet stove. Aren't you suppled to clean those things when there is NOT a fire inside it... I have never seen one where you could clean it like that and open the ash dump while it had a fire going. Is that thing force feed or gravity feed?

Corie I have been running it on the lowest setting
so the glass gets dirty in about 12 hours on low.
This stove has 5 settings and honestly, I never have
to run it higher than #2 in order to keep most of
the house at 72F during an average winter.
If it didn't get so hot in here I could run it on the
higher settings and the glass wouldn't fog up so
quickly. Doesn't bother me at all anyway.

jtp - What you saw was the daily scraping of the
heat exchange tubes and the burnpot, which as I said
in the video, I do several times a day. As you
saw, it's very simple and quick to safely clean both with the stove
running and is all that is required for daily maintenance to
keep the stove running well.
I empty the ash pan and disassemble the
interior of the stove, and cleanout the "ash traps", once a month at which time
the stove is shut down and completely cooled.

When I get some more time I will do another video showing
the full monthly cleaning.

Yup Elk. It's been burning 24/7 since November other than one overnight shutdown
on the first of each month for a full blown cleanout.

BrotherBart, thanks!

Normal cleaning yes, but scraping the burnpot several times a day is a huge PITA. I ran my hand through the burnpot to clean out ours, like once every two weeks. Is this the fuel that requires such high maintenance?

It takes less than a minute to do it BeGreen
so imo it isn't a pita at all. Some pellets
I don't have to do it as often but less than
a minute, 3 times a day - no biggy to me.
If I am gone all day the stove doesn't blow
up if the burn pot hasn't been scraped so
it's probably not absolutely necessary but I
do it because I am here most of the time..

Only have to empty the ash traps and ash
pan once a month...This year and last year
we ran this sucker 24/7 from Nov to May as our
primary heat source, shutting down
only once a month for the full cleanout and not a
hiccup...so, imo, this is a very easy stove to maintain.

Always interesting to see how other stoves are worked. Nice stove.

I'll admit - I've never seen a pellet stove in action before. Looks like that will keep the house nice and toasty. I still have some stubborn piles of snow around the yard, but they will be gone in a few days. Next time - put up a video of the "sporty" in action - still can't take the bike out... getting into the mud season here.

Harley this stove does keep the place toasty and
it's very rare that I've had to turn it past #2 setting.
(there are 5 settings)
I'd buy another one of these in a heartbeat, specially
after hearing all gripes and trouble from folks on the net
who run other brands. Like I said, not as much as a hiccup
from this thing in the two seasons we've run it as our
daily primary heat source.
I have a short vid of the sporty on youtube btw. I've had the
bike out twice so far in 07 but I don't have any mud here. ;-)

ZETA looks like you will finally have good riding weather.

BTW how is your mother doing? see I do remember things

haha. Yes Elk, good riding weather but now I'm
torn between riding the bike or going out fishing
in the boat. ;-P

My Mom is doing well thanks for asking and remembering!
She has been in the blue hill alzheimers care center in stoughton
since Feb 23rd. The transition was more difficult for us kids
than it was for her but again, thank you for asking about her.

SenorFrog:

I bought the stove here http://www.commonwealthfireplace.com/
Frankly I found the salesguy to be a complete moron and if stoves
were plentiful then, I probably would have made my purchase elsewhere.
That said, pellet stoves were selling like hotcakes at the time and
nobody had any in stock (it was in Oct 2005).

I paid $2400 for the stove and another $400 for a 4" pipe kit which
included a complete reline from stove to chimney cap. We did a self
install. You can get this stove for less now I believe. I have seen it
elsewhere on the internet recently for $1700.

Plus, I know for a fact that this stove shop, given the chance would
practice a bit of price gouging. A friend of mine in canton
bought a harman P38 from them a couple weeks before I bought my stove,
and after he installed it, the shop called him and asked him if he would
be interested in selling it back to them. He was like wtf? So he asked
why and they said they had a customer who would pay 2500 for it!
I've never been back there since and won't. If our stove needs any
parts replaced I will buy the part and do it myself. Can't be any more
difficult than the work I do on my motorcycle, boat, jeep, and computer.
