Had some pretty crazy rain on Saturday while I was out of town. Came home to find a nice water stain on top of the insert. First time this has happened in 3 years of owning it. What's a guy to do to prevent this from happening. I am not thrilled at all to be pulling it out and painting it.

Is there a full SS liner on the insert with a cap?

If so, and there's water, it sounds like you need to check how the plate at the top of the chimney is sealed.

In some cases, water can even leak through the chimney itself.

It is both lined and capped doublewall pipe roughly 25'. I have not pulled the baffle inside yet to see if it was inside the insert also. If its just on the outside, then its more than likely the plate at the roofline, correct?
