I did a double take looking for it. I saw the hearth first then I saw a small hole in the middle, so weird.

You just nailed it is located in a 15th century castle in France.
 
By the way, it is not an earth only, It is the fire place as they actually use to burn their wood right on the earth.
 
Woot, another Quebequois on the forums!

nice stove, I had figured it would be a castle in France when I saw the Fleur de Lys engraved on the chair!
