I was looking through the manual to my new Stihl saw and It expressly warns not to use one. Before I right it off as a useful tool I'd like to know what it is and how it's used.

Thats old school didnt know they made them for new saws..There is old ones still around that are cool but I would not want to run one for firewood or production.
The intent of the design was to reduce pinching. They are known to be more dangerous than a typical bar. I personally have never used one...and don't plan to.
