Jay I can say this with lots of Dutch courage, cause I just downed another shot of whiskey. It is NOT Oak.
The description of dogwood fits your pics exactly, just not sure what it is.
Yes you can see ray flecks, lots of them. Rays are wood cells that run perpendicular to the length of the tree. They transport nutrients and water like our blood vessels.

You'd be wrong.

I showed the pictures to a local tree guy, he said without a doubt red oak.

This looks like the huge dogwood I have right outside my house. It's just about that diameter and from what the neighbors tell be it's 60 years old. I cut a few limbs to clean it up and it has to be one of the hardest woods I have ever encountered. We don't have hedge around here but I bet it is just as good. It's mostly ornamental and you don't see many get that big.
 
Lol ok I think we all will just have to agree to disagree. Either way, I think it will burn great! :)
