riffing on EatenByLimestone's advice you could spread it on a gravel driveway too...but in a manner so that it won't track into the house.
 
My father burned coal and used the ash to change the grade and fill low spots in the yard. Looking back I'm not sure if that was a good idea due to heavy metals, etc.
