Dude, this is a steel stove. Unless those yahoos took it up to 1000 °F it should be fine. There is no real break in necessary.
 
As BG mentioned steel stoves are pretty tough . . . that said . . . buying a stove can be an expensive proposition and if you're not comfortable with the purchase you're best doing what you think is right.

If you opt to not pursue the PE line and are looking at Jotuls I think it's pretty clear that most folks think the Castine would be the right size for you . . . but again it's your choice and your money as to what you want to go with in the end.
