Question:

I own two stoves- Jotul 118- a standard box with smoke chamber and the smallest simplest Lange. Both are pretty old- but we like them. If we wanted a small stove-either 16 inch wood or 24 inch what would you recommend? We no longer see many articles in magazines on stoves. Thinking about building a house and hope to have a woodstove (noncooking) in the kitchen.

Answer:

Jotul still makes the 602- a nice box stoves that has been updated with a glass panel in the door and clean burning. They also make a new small unit called the nordic. There are less choices that before- because the 1990 EPA standards (clean burning) forced manufacturers to spend a lot of money on R&D. The good news is that most stoves available today are good quality.
