We are into the shoulder season now in Lower NY. I loaded the stove at 6:30am when I left. My wife told me tonight that she came home from work at about 8 and just turned on the heat rather the restart the stove! there was probably enough going on in there to get the fire going with much effort, but was tired and hungry. I won't be home until after 11. My first feeling was anger and betrayal. I guess I should just get over it and make a fire when I get home tonight. Its just that that damn propane is so expensive, I hate to use even a once more than I have to. Good thing spring is just around the corner.

Pull the thermostat off the wall and hide it;) I have been down that road many times during shoulder season. There is just times when you get tired or are to tired from other things to want to full around with a fire;hm

If you are both working give yourselves a break. Otherwise, why are you both busting hump?

Disconnect one of the wires on the t-stat.

I figure with the amount of money we save during the course of the year . . . if my wife (or me for that matter) is just too tired to light a fire (at that immediate moment or tired of lighting yet another fire) then I don't give her any grief about firing up the oil boiler . . . especially since she usually turns up the thermostat to get warm and then turns it back down . . . not to mention that she keeps the fire going all winter long when I'm not around. I figure we've saved plenty of money and can afford to burn a few dinosaurs . . . I mean heck . . . it's been what, three or four years and just now I'm down to a little more than a quarter tank of oil.

I hear you all. I'm sure it didn't take the boiler long to bring the house up a few degrees with it being just under 40 outside. Probably about the same run time as my stepson's girlfriend's shower, But that's a whole other story!

You don't have a lock cage over your thermostat?:)

Keep the wife happy. Words to live by. Which is worth more? $5 in your pocket (cost of propane) or a wife who isn't griping about having to get the stove going after a long day's work? I know my answer.

I hear you and feel your pain. I work from home 3 days a week, and my wife used to feed the stove when I was away. (I would get up early and start the stove, so she didn't need to reload until say 10:00am and 2:00 pm) Well, that lasted for 2 years or so, and now when I come home the fire is out and the thermostat is kicked up to like 68-70.
Been burning more oil and not happy.

You ROCK, Bonnie :)

I'm to that point myself, brutal winter temp wise. Except the oil burner doesn't work ;)

what the heck is 19C some sort of code???

It's those crazy Canadians and the metric system . . . to this day I still have no idea if a number like 19 celsius is really hot or just barely warm. My wife, a nurse, is much better at making the conversions.

Multiply by 2 and add 32 ....that gets you close enough for hot warm cold decision making.

LOL. Crazy Canadians eh? I have been called worse.

However, "The United States is the only industrialised country that does not use the metric system as its official system of measurement"

To go from Celsius to Fahrenheit (simply, not 100% accurate) multiply by 2 and add 30. So 20C would be 20X2 + 30 = 70F. And to go from Fahrenheit to Celcius: subtract 30 and divide by 2.

Welcome, eh!?

We start a fire in the morning to get the house up to temp (73*F)....burn enough to maintain....then I put in the last light load at 11pm, and let it go, if the heat kicks on, so be it.......it won't run for long.....I'm an early riser and fire it back up

HehHeh . . . my tongue in cheek humor . . . "crazy" and "Canadian" are two words that are rarely seen beside each other. Now "stable" and "sensible" and "friendly" next to "Canadian" . . . sure.

I was also poking a bit of fun about the fact that we here in the US of A along with Liberia and Myanmar are the last hold outs when it comes to using the metric system.

That's OK Jake, I can certainly take it!

I don't agree with the word stable...I would more than likely use "crazy" ;)

How are things down in Maine? I used to live in New Brunswick and would hit up Bangor for shopping every 4-5 months.

ANd yes, I do wish the US would start using the metric system. I don't think anybody is ready to use Kelvin as a temperature gauge.... lol

About the same as it always is . . . a few snow flurries today, now rain . . . outside is gray and brown with some splotches of left over snow. Lots of mud. Mud season.

Bangor continues to expand, albeit slowly. We now have a Five Guys . . . Buffalo Wild Wings is coming in soon . . . the 1978 Wendys out at the Mall will soon be tore down and rebuilt . . . there is talk about re-doing Main Street near the casino to make it look more like a boulevard . . . the Waterfront Concerts start up in a month -- lots of big time country acts coming in, some hard rock and some Top 40 acts I have never heard of. All in all, it's a decent place to work.

Got to keep them happy! Since I got my new boiler and storage my wife lights a fire without complaining 1 word...with the old boiler there wasn't a day that went by that she din't complain about it even when I was the one lighting it.( I don't blame her but I an really happy I got a nice simple system that she can easily fire without help)
