Question:

Hi--I want to install a wood burning- zero-clearance fireplace in our rather small living room. The only place that would work is a corner of the room (one wall of corner is outside wall- if that makes any difference). Does any company make a wood burning fireplace that is specifically designed to fit in a corner? That is- one that is small or--even better--shaped more like a triangle than a rectangle? The problem with installing a regular pre-fab woodstove is that it will take up about a quarter of the room.

Answer:

Most of the pre-fabs on the market are shaped like a trapezoid- that is the back is smaller than the front and the sides angle back. This allows them to sit tight back into a corner. Even with this design- you can figure on a minimum of about 40 inches out each wall (to where the fireplace surround will contact the walls)Temco- FMI and many others make 36 inch or 32 inch units that meet this criteria.
There are a number of newer units from companies such as Travis Industries, which are very narrow - but tall, and designed for perfect corner installation.
