I don't know much about wood I am trying to learn, sorry.
Don't apologize, I'm just trying to help educate. Tulip Poplar and Ash have nearly identical looking bark and sapwood. Without twigs/leaves the easiest distinguishing characteristic is the heartwood. On tulip Poplar the heartwood is that olive/green/yellow/purple-ish color and on ash it is either the same color as the sapwood or a slightly darker color, like a light brown.
