This is a piece from a downed tree lining our driveway. I was cleaning up the area with my wife and we split this and found some great coloration. Yard work is usually my job 100% of the time so any little thing to get her to pitch in I'm all for. She said it looked "pretty" and since I do some hobby woodworking I'm hoping to Resaw some of it and get a bit of wood to make a small frame. What the heck species was this tee guys? My guess was red maple - I've noticed maple tends to hold its bark for a long time after cut. Mostly in my yard we have beech, maples, and basswood, with some hickory and ash. Thanks so much!

Hard to tell since this branch looks dead/decayed.

No idea what you have there but if you think it will look good go ahead with the resaw and see if you like the results. If you like it you win.

It is pretty decayed. I don't know either but it's not punky. We shall see how it resaws

It kinda looks like decayed cedar, similar to the fence poles I need to repair on a regular basis.
