First off, I'm sorry for no Pic and I know that may make this impossible but here goes.....Picked up a load of wood from the tree service place this morning. Average size rounds but a bark that I have just never seen....Thin and jet black with a tinge of rust color. Not like paper(birch) and not peeling (old silver maple) Lord I wish I had a photo... Oh ya...rounds are HEAVY! Never had this wood before...

Could you be describing shagbark hickory? Except for the jet black. I would not describe hickory as jet black.

Could also be Black Birch
Pretty tough to I.D from a description :)

What do it smell like?

Hard maple? Shot in the dark :)
