Sorry I forgot to get pictures.
The bark is like cherry, not quite as dark, more of a gray. But with the same peeling. In fact I thought it was cherry when I cut it.
The wood is light with a yellowish, almost punky heartwood.
Is this yellow birch?
The tree was on my plan to remove anyway to get some more light into the garden but I figure its not going to be a big btu tree.

Sounds like birch to me.
