I'll venture out not knowing what the leaves look like on this tree and call it some sort of walnut :)
 
My first response was sassafras and I still think that's right, but there's an easy test for sourwood. A mature sourwood would be loaded with fruit right now. It looks like a many-fingered hand with lots of dry capsules on it. Very similar to the ornamental shrub Pieris (common name Andromeda), and don't worry about male vs. female, no such thing in that family. Sassafras fruit, when you find it, is a berry.

Sourwood isn't native to NJ but it is widely planted as an ornamental.
