Probably killed dutch elm disease.
 
Yep, looks like an American elm. Definitely worth the grabbing, IMO. I wouldn't call it 'seasoned' till it's split and stacked for a while, but I'll bet some of it'll be ready to burn this winter if you get it processed right away!

Guy texted me back this morning that it was already gone...... I was bummed.... It would have been the first elm I had gotten.

Ohh well you win some you lose some. Thanks for the ID tho!.

Not too disappointing losing a little Elm (unless it was Red;) There are a lot of species that give off more heat and are easier to split.
