Does anyone know what type of wood this is? It looks like something in the soft family to me but I'm not an expert at this.

Scotch Pine, possibly. Burns much hotter than most pines. About the same as Soft Maple. Get as much as you can.

Sadly no needles. It was at the compost center already cut up into rounds. Scotch Pine or Red spruce, both have similar drying habits correct?

I agree it is softwood and there are several good guesses above. All of the possibilities dry about the same. They'll be ready next year if not sooner.
