Does anyone know what type of wood this is? It looks like something in the soft family to me but I'm not an expert at this.

Hemlock . . . maybe Scotch pine. Any needles?
 
Sadly no needles. It was at the compost center already cut up into rounds. Scotch Pine or Red spruce, both have similar drying habits correct?

I agree it is softwood and there are several good guesses above. All of the possibilities dry about the same. They'll be ready next year if not sooner.
