Today I managed to scrounge some pine and some other species. You can see two pieces on the right side of the image of this 'other.'

A closeup of the bark--note the horizontal lenticels (right?) Could this be cherry?

Okay, apparently you have to click on the thumbs to get the full size images. Don't know what's up with that.

The bark looks like an ornamental cherry. The piece of trunk in the picture gives the impression that this was a small tree with a branched trunk, which is also typical for ornamental cherries. The only thing I don't know about is the color of the wood - this wood is white and I'd expect a darker wood for a cherry, but I am not familiar with the wood of the ornamental cherries.

I thought maple too when I first handled it. The only cherry I've ever burned was branches and tops.

Just went out back to split some more. This stuff resembles maple in every way, I was just thrown by the bark.

That wood is really white, not sure you don't have some hackberry. Some of the bark, including the round you have set up asking about could be hackberry too. I am working up one that is 36 inches at the base now so I have hackberry on the brain;lol;lol;lol

I also thought hackberry. The pictures aren't enough for me to be sure.

Alabama maple.
