A guy at work said he had some wood i could swing by and pick up. Not sure what it is. I'm bad with ID's with no leaves. I think its poplar.

May be Ash, how heavy is it?
 
Do you have a shot of the end grain? I'm not feeling the poplar id.
 
Ya, hard to tell by the pictures but it is not ash. Looks like a softer wood too.
