Tree was 36", rounds were heavy, splits easy. No leaves around.

Looks very much like sasafrass. Does it have a strong "root beer "scent ?

Looks like Ash. Especially with what you said about it.

I thought it was ash, but it splits so clean, and after having it split a few days, it's pretty light.
Maybe it was standing dead?

Obviously ash, considered by some to be the best all around fire wood.

Ash is pretty easy splitting stuff. Usually not stringy.
