Not sure on pic 1. Pic 2, however, reminds me of Elm of some sort.
 
Pic 1 and 2 from same tree ?
Looks like river birch (Betula nigra), which is native to SE U.S. and Mississippi valley, but can be found growing into NY.
Tough to split (lots of epicormic sprouts). Not sure what its Btu value is, but it's not as good as black birch (B. lenta).
 
Two diff trees...
That leaf was the only one left, Got it from a site being cleared...
I'm trying to learn leaves and i'm dreaming about being like the guys here id'ing the rounds and splits...

Both look like river birch to me.
