And be careful not to tear the sealing bead on the tire either.They will usually come off one side easier than the other,check your rim once the tire is broken off the bead,if one side looks narrower,take it off of that side.Be sure to push one side the bead down into the center of the rim also,where it's deeper,then start prying the bead off the opposite side.
 
I'd suggest getting some tire irons at your local motorcycle shop, they will work far better than screwdrivers, with lower odds of puncturing the tube or screwing up the tire / rim...

For squeezing the tire to make the beads seat, I've had decent luck using one of those ratcheting tiedown / cargo straps.

If you're tubing what used to be a tubeless tire, all you gotta do is deflate the thing and get the bead off one side of the rim...a hammer works pretty good, just smack it in toward the center of the rim...you don't have to pry the tire bead off the outside. Pull out the old valve stem that was set into the rim and throw it away. Squish the tube into the tire the best you can, and fish the tube's valve stem out the hole in the rim. Get the tube as "round" and untwisted as you can in there, and for gosh sakes, do something to keep that valve stem from sneaking back in there when you go to inflate the tube. Pump it up and the tire will re-seat itself. You don't need to strap it around the outside unless you're putting on a new tubeless tire, where you're trying to get the thing to seat before it'll inflate. Rick
