beside sleeping hibbomock
so the other day driving in my folks' neighborhood, i spotted a pile of fresh cut firewood ! I swung the car around and knocked on the door, but no one was home..damn...must act fast. So i left a note in the mailbox. later the homeowner calls and leaves me a message " yeah, you can have that wood, and i just cut a whole bunch more "...I called him back, set up a pick up time and took it ALL !
3 full size pickup trucks later and this is what i scored. looks to be mostly 24" oak rounds and black birch in varying sizes all equalling about 1-1/5 cords.

Call me next time, I'd be glad to help and split the load.

Great score!

Nice score , tomorrow iam going to pick up some oak . Lady said it was a large oak tree and that i'd need some muscle to move the large rounds. Ha nothing the Ms 361 wont handle !

All cut up too...that is sweet.

Nice score. I got a similar deal today. Pulled up at my moms house, looking down the street I see cones and what looks like Sycamore stacked at the curb. Put it back in drive swing around, yep, the town tree service guys just took a big limb off a 150 year old sycamore. Averaged about 16" round lined the 8' bed of my truck 1 layer deep. Dam solid & hard stuff, bear to split though. The splitter tears it's way through. Maybe cause it's green & frozen.

I just got my first Sycamore (free) from my tree service guy. Cut it up havent split it yet, it is real heavy and dense. Wonder how it splits, is it stringy, or does it pop like maple or walnut.
Being a Cabinet Maker it makes nice high-end drawer sides..........

No, not like maple at all. Very stringy and interlocked grain. Worse than Cherry for splitting. But it burns real nice.

I was a cabinet maker for my first 20 years.... Horrible way to try to make a living these days.

I've been building cabinets since 1980 and been self employed since 85 but this last year and a half verry lean. One good thing super-insulated house in country on an acre and a half is paid off and no car payments.
Building a wind generator now................

Turned out it wasnt and Oak that i went to get, was maple and Black Locust ! AH love the Locust. Got 2 truck loads ! Puts me right around 5-6 chords with my other wood finds.

Fantastic!

Now, I'd be willing to bet those folks would appreciate a good sized ham or something like that for Christmas. They helped you, now it is time for you to help them. But, you probably already have.

Hey awoodman,

Sycamore, huh?? That is one of my least favorite trees. I believe they should all be burned.

Anyone who has had one growing near their homes knows what I'm talking about. This must be the dirtiest tree of all time. IN spring, it drops pollen all over the place like a bad porno, green powder covering cars, windsheilds driveways, etc. etc. Throughout the growing season, random branches die/decay/fall and land throughout the landscape/on cars/driveways/roof/etc. Oh yeah, they have beautiful pealing bark, that just keeps pealing and pealing, all over the place. What else, yess.. the seed balls, similar to a sweet gum, drop all over the place and fill storm drains. ALmost forgot, in the fall they drop leaves the size of your head that pile up and make a mess..

Burn them.... burn them all...

Brian

Actually it was me with the Sycamore. I grew up in a town where they lined the streets. Huge tree's three foot diameter at the base and solid as a rock. Though the leaves are not big at all, actually a little smaller then most... Never had any problems with branches falling from these, in fact it was a red oak that just dropped a branch through someone's car window two doors down. The bark, my mom still complains about it all the time, but then again she is one of those OCD people that needs to have a perfect and sterile green carpet of a lawn. I actually have fond memories of the bark shedding, reminds me of summer as a child. I'll tell ya this the sycamore is a dam solid tree. When we moved there some 35 years ago they were then over a hundred years old, they and sugar maples lined the streets every 25 feet was a massive tree. About five years later, sometime in the mid seventies, a serious hurricane came through, spawned a few twisters in town and everything. In a town only 4 square miles 185 trees were downed within 24 hours, 99% of them were the Sugar maples and some assorted Ash and Oaks and such. I think there were only 1 or 2 sycamore that came down in the entire town.

Man, I can just feel how heavy those oak rounds are - even to roll sometimes. I made the mistake of cutting the last red oak I processed to 24" for the olympic - man those were heavy. looks like some of yours are not so long - good.
