The Last fire of the season. How much did you burn?

Tonight will be the last fire we burn for the season. The next couple weeks show highs in the 60s and 70s. Today though sunday will only be in the 50s so it give me a chance to burn some ugglies and use up the last of what I brought up to the house about a month ago.

In total for this year I burned only about 2/3rds what I burned last winter. Most of my wood was pecan, elm, and white oak. The pecan and elm were great for the shoulder season we had most of the winter and the oak I burned was really a waste most of the time but I kept it burning pretty slow. I'd say I burned a good 2 cords and never had the heater kick on except for a couple cold mornings. When it kicked on I promptly got out of bed to turn it off and add some wood to the fire. I'm a cord ahead of where I thought I needed to be this time last year.

How much did you get by with this year?

Not done yet, but probably not too much more to go. About 3.5 cord so far, mostly oak but also a mongrel mix including everything from arborvitae and red cedar to white pine.

This is actually the most wood ever in a year for me. Not because it was cold, but because I was on a mission to burn the stove whenever I could, to see how many days I could string together without the heat pump cranking up even once.

I'll have 4+ cord of oak on hand for next season.

I always start the season so eager to burn that I end up opening windows because it gets too hot in the house.

You will probably find that very few are done burning for the year. We never figure we are done until well into May here. However, we have already had our first night with the stove cold and that is very unusual for us. As for wood consumption, we probably will be about 30% less this year but that is only a SWAG.

Still working on the wood I had scheduled for use in February. Probably have enough of that to last for another week, maybe longer if the forecast stays true. Temps are due to get into the 50's for the next 2 weeks, so not much wood will be consumed. I may end up with about a full cord that should have been burned, but like Dennis said, I don't think we're done until mid-May. Usually use close to 5 cord/yr.

good ole boy used to live next to me, burned wood. i recall him compaining one time to me, saying 'had to make fire in JUNE!'

I've had fires going in the middle of May here in Northern Ky. Last year I burned a couple of days during the first week of May.
I've got one going now, but it may be the last for a while. I always count on burning a handful of days in April.

2 cords, one cord less then usual. I get a feeling we're going to have one of those freak cold snaps yet. My mamma always said " I remember one year when we hid Easter eggs in the yard the night before, woke up Easter morning with 2 inches of snow, we could find a single egg." I have about 1/2 cord left. I was afraid I was going to run out this year, life got in the way of my wood accumulation hobby. Got 3 1/2 cord ready for next year and just made room for another cord.

calling for 19 tomorrow night, I'm not done yet. But if I have to guess where I'll end up, it's looking like about 3 to 3 1/3 cord instead of the usual 4.5. Much warmer winter than normal.

same here, BB. We are like Dennis, usually burn right into May (at least the last couple years it's been that way). We let it go down to coals throughout the day on warmer days (past two days were in the mid 60's up here in central PA) but at night I get it going again for an overnight fire. I've had one going since early evening, it has been in the mid 50's but rainy and damp. Wind is really picking up now, I think that colder air we're supposed to get is squeezing it's way in. What really bumps my hump is I have lots of great, seasoned oak in the basement right now, brought it in back in the beginning of February expecting SOME cold weather, but we've really had none to talk about. I fear if I haul all that oak back out to the stack, we'll get a cold snap. So I'm burning that white oak in the shoulder season, maybe it will keep the cold outta here!!

I am responsible for the warm winter. In October I moved two years worth of oak into the shed, built the new generator shed and bought two more gennies and mounted the snow blade. Said then that it would guarantee a warm winter. It worked.

I burn when it gets cold in the house. That can be one day and the AC on the next. I have burned a lot less wood this year and with 2 stoves instead of one, but I don't think I am done yet. Last week one day it got up to 63 °F and dropped to 23 °F that night.

Not done here I'm sure. I have burnt about 3 cords and have a cord on the patio outside the stove room (walk in basement). Just started back up about a hour ago as the cold is moving in. No fire last night as the house was 76 after work y-day 71 this morning. I will likely quit about the middle of April and just run the natural gas boiler the rest of the way in. I use gas for cook stove,hot water heater and a heater in the garage. Budget is $77 which picks up about Sept. just got the bill the other day and it was $28 as I am ahead of the curve. Usually don't see that till April.

Forecast low here tomorrow night is 26 and more then likely their will be more cold spells.

Still burning, temps dropped from 50 to 30 with heavy rains,wind and it's started to snow so I packed the Liberty with Sugar Maple (it was in the racks) locked in at 650 degrees stovetop.

Still have under a cord of Cherry which we planned on burning this year.
