The other day my parents neighbor offered me a 1999 jimmy for 200 dollars it has 120,000 miles on it ! The tires are good year wranglers and are all new as well. So good engine 800 dollars in tires and they claim a bad trans. Needless to say I snapped it up drove it home and put it in the garage. It is loaded to the hilt with features and not in too bad of body shap. The transmission has no fluid and that appears to be the only issue with it ! Pics are coming.

WHAT A DEAL !

So the problem is the trans has no fluid?

Sounds like a hell of a deal even if the trans is junk.
 
Those 4L60E trannies are easy and relatively cheap to find. Pretty tough too so maybe topping off the fluid and figuring out any fluid leaks is the answer?
 
Pete, there is a fitting on the radiator which comes from a cooling line of the transmission. This is notorious for leaking. Maybe thats why the tranny had no fluid???

Aside from the weak reaction sun shell, they're ok.

Off topic...But my wife's Jeep just started leaking fluid from the tranny cooling lines. Any thoughts on cutting out the damaged part and replacing with rubber hose (maybe double clamped at each end)? Looks like a PIA to route new lines through!

If its leaking where rubber is crimped to steel line you might stand a chance. Cut out the old hose and clamp it to the existing barbs.

You need hose deisgned for oil.

If you are talking about clamping rubber to straight steel line I wouldn't chance it.

I would play it safe and rerun the coolant line because that is one thing that can really bite you in the end if it is not done correctly. The problem with rubber is it tends to dry out even if it is for oil and it wont hold for crap if it is only shoved on the end and clamped. I have not had very good luck in the past going that route and ended up rerunning the lines anyways.

Thanks...Figured it wasn't a great idea, but being lazy, I am always looking for a short cut!

Yep its not an epidemic, just the weakest link in the 4l60E imo. ;)
 
Ok finally got round to taking pictures of the jimmy. I have been working mostly on the bottom side cleaning out the transmission and oil pans. The oil was so thick it looked like molasses ! I degreased the engine compartment and washed the heck out of it because it sat for 1.5 years and got all kinds of dirt and surface corrosion on it as well. The real kicker so far is that the trans was out of fluid as was the rear differential. I am guessing that was why the trans was not working ;lol it runs good now. The rest is mainly cosmetic aside from leaf springs and shocks !

you need transmission line hose not regular fuel hose also use fuel injection clamps cut the leaking section out and replace advance auto has it about 1.00 a foot

Thanks...Ended up just buying the new lines, Replaced the rusty oils pan while I was under there also.
