Challenge.gov set up a contest to challenge students to develop energy efficiency apps. The results are impressive. I'm going to explore them and will get back with my impressions.

Here are some of the winners. They are very cool apps that you may find useful:

Looking for the ideal energy saving lightbulbs?

Want to know your energy usage in meaningful terms?

If you want to understand how this applies to your utility bill try:

Nice but only tantalizing.....the personal efficiency tools that are not data driven are not that useful (and there are a bunch already). The coolest apps that will track your usage are all based on the 'big green button' platform that is still being implemented by a consortium of (an incomplete set) of utilities. My outfit, PECO, is an early adopter for the big green button, but won't go live for another year or more! IN the mean time, I will have to log my usage with a Kill-A-Watt and my Home Energy Monitor and typing into a spreadsheet.

The options come ~2014 will be really swank.

What's an app?
