Magnify the picture and look at the grain-looks smooth like Maple to me, not with a lot of grainy lines in it like Ash. And that bark is too tight and thin for White Ash which is deeper and has more furrows. But I could be wrong.....looks like Maple I get here more than Ash....

I agree, looks too smooth for ash.

Also here is a picture of a maple in my yard and the last remaining decent sized ash with half it's leaves this year.(notice the exit holes)

I just wish I would have seen some branches and leaves on these darn things. O.K.........if I do run across these trees again in the future, and have to choose between the two.......which one is the superior hardwood? Thanks again for the help everybody......and stay thirsty my friends!!

I will say this guys......be the wood ash or maple......it sure splits easier by hand than that darn cherry. Heck, the oak was easier than the cherry. No, I am not splitting with a rubber mallet, or a shovel.........and yes.....I have sharpened my ax within the last 5 years......right after I drug it behind my '84 Citation down one of our wonderful Michigan roads, of course! Thanks again for all the info!

I thought it was maple too but being somwhat inexperiended I was going with the crowd. Spunty, Ill take red oak any day for splitting, usually splits nice and easy with my Fiskars, white oak is a little tougher, especially when the rounds are a bit seasoned.

I agree probably maple. The bark don't look right for ash. The picture of the split isn't close enough for proper ID

Cherry can be a pain to split sometimes so don't feel bad; some of it has very twisted grain and will fight you till the death!

Thanks for splitting that piece as it satisfyed my curiosity-I just had a feeling it was Maple....just something about the looks of it but you have to see the inside of it to be sure. I've been fooled by the Maple/Ash thing before too but I guess I'm learning....

All the English Walnut I get here has a very smooth bark with shallow furrows, and it is a much duller-grey color.

Interesting-I never even heard of that! I'll have to look it up....was the bark similiar to the picture?

The older parts of the tree, yes but the younger limbs where that smooth blue gray color you discribed.

love to burn cherry when I will be working outside to smell it, and especially when company is expected over, as the smell is awesome. Burns darn hot too.

I actually broke my ax splitting it today. It was not the handle that broke........The cutting ax I was using to beat the crap of the splitting wedge cracked and broke at the top of the ax where the wood stops all the way to the bottom where the wood goes in. I'll try and get a pic of it. Seriously...this is some tough crap!

Never thought is that but it fits the bark and the split picture better yet.
