Swedish Torch - pics & video

[PA Fire Bug]

Our daughter had some friends over the other night to celebrate her 10th birthday I had some PA legal (lame) fireworks to set off. While I was outside, I burnt our waste paper and cardboard. After most of the paper burnt, I placed a Swedish torch in the center and piled cardboard and some kindling around it. It lit pretty fast and burnt up through the center. The girls weren't impressed but I enjoyed watching it burn.

I obviously from this site have figured out what one is, but does it have to be a certain type wood? I would think something stringy like elm or gum would catch and burn better but im guessing 15% MC oak will light up pretty well.

I used the stringiest wood that I had since I couldn't split it. It was cut a year ago and was nice and dry. The first one that I burnt a few weeks ago took a while to burn through the center. This one took off fairly quickly withou the use of any accelerants.

I have only made them of ash. But they light quick after only a month or two...

Looks awesome PA Fire Bug..... I think they are pretty slick.... I have 8 made up now that I am gonna try and sell. I think people would buy them for $10 (with Super Cedar shaved inside/ ready to lightl/ just add match) Its an all in one package...

That looks impressive. I reckon you could put pan or pot on that nice flat top and cook a little feast too.

It is cool, but $10? I guess to some city Yuppi that has way more money than sense or time, and drives a beamer or caddy? They can drive up and put it in their trunk and haul it home stuff it inthe corner of the garage to bun in thier $500 outdoor "fire pit" this fall.

That must be one valuable piece of firewood to have a guard nearby. We plan to take one with us on our annual trip to the Fimger Lake wineries in October. Any special steps need to be taken to produce one?

Firebug, that last pic looks cool, and I see you feel the same as it is now your avatar! I'm going to make some, just have to find a nice, barkless white or red oak to make them out of. Dex, I like the selling idea! Maybe label them as "redneck cookstove"?

we paid 8 bucks for two dinky bundles of firewood up at the Finger Lakes this week when we went camping. By dinky, I mean 4 little splits per bundle. yes, a dollar a split. And I am no city yuppie either! You list those on craigslist, you'll have us hillbillies from all over Gods creation buying them up. Paint 'em up like a Miller Lite or Budwieser can and you could probably DOUBLE the price!

$10 seems like a lot, but as Scotty said. The little buddles of slab wood (read :bark) will burn in under an hour. Where this has starter inside already and will last about 2 hrs (lasts longer, but won't be standing still).

And yes, those Yuppies are my target. As I have enough Cordwood for yrs... You can cook on them, or just add a match and enjoy 2 hrs of marshmallows and crack'lin flames I actually was gonna put $15. But $10 is more reasonable. If you were to split that round, it would be 8 nice splits. Which is equal to about 4 of those little gas station bundles..

Got a wedding to go to in a few weeks and I have several made for the walkway to the reception area. Im pretty sure I wont have a problem getting rid of them. Especially after they see them in action

Might just make a nice wedding gift also Have it clayed inlaid from Adios Pantyhose with date and maybe words of wisdom like"Marriage is great, get past the first 100 years and it gets easier" just a thought

When we travel near Raystown Lake, we see many homeowners selling small bundles of campfire wood. They must have agreed on the price because everyone charges $3. Given the proximity to the lake I think people would pay $5 or maybe more especially if they were easy to ignite. The main road near our home gets a lot of boat traffic to Raystown but we are too far from the main road to set up a self serve camp wood store. Selling wood at $3 a bundle would be a great way to earn money for wood processing expenses.

Not really. I searched YouTube for Swedish torch and found many examples. I found the one at most helpful.
