What do you guys think of 1/8" fiberglass fabric. Mcmaster sells it in 3" or 4" or 6" wide by 10 ft long for about $12.60. Thinking of buying some and cutting out the center hole. Mcmaster part# is 8817k892, max temp is 1000deg. Could always stack 2 high if not thick enough. Could make like 40 gaskets out of one piece.

Yea or Nay?

You can be the guinea pig and let us know how it works.....;)
I think it sounds like a good idea but I do wonder if 1000 degree rating is high enough for the firebox of the stove.

If you are going to try this I would get the 1/8" vermiculite coated version in a 2" or 3" wide strip roll. It's rated at 1500F. http://www.mcmaster.com/#87835K742

But frankly that seems more hassle than it's worth. This is a coarse woven fabric so it's uncertain how well the weave integrity will be when cut down to a narrow 1/4", but my gut feeling is that it will not be too good. In comparison, you can make a hogwildz gasket for a buck and it will last for years.

Good point, thats why I asked it here. what size rope did hogz use?

Interesting tidbit, rutland gasket as per their website is good to 1000 deg. I bought 1400 deg rope from Mcmaster.

You can also try cutting out a gasket from a batt of Roxul. Roxul can take more heat vs fiberglass. Just make sure to use a serrated type bread knife to cut it out.
