I am going to purchase a USED wood Burner - Help PLEASE!

I am currently looking at purchasing one of three differnt used stoves. I want to buy a stove for emergency situations (like when we lose electricity for days on end) and to suppliment our furnace. I enjoy all the senses of burning wood. I realize there are probably benefits to all types of wood burners, so I will tell about the three I am looking at and pricing and possibley some good soul could tell me the pro's and con's of each? I would appreciate that very much!

#1 Pre 1940's (I think) Eagle Foundry - beautiful brown enameled finish - 45" tall - 18" deep and 27" wide . Door near the top and the bottom in the front. Beautiful condition. Extra set of handles and grates. Can't find one like it on the internet. $200.00

#2 1979 Vermont Castings Resolute Model - Black. In Good condition $450.00

#3 1982 Lopi X Fireplace Insert in excellent condition - $450.00

Room size: 16' wide x 37' long - Northern Iowa - had some - 25 ambient air temp last winter.

I can wait and put an ad on Craigslist for something newer or specific with your recommendations?

What sized space are you heating? I can't speak anything about the old Eagle Foundry unit. Is it an old cabinet model like this?


It will be pre-UL and will need good clearances. Performance unknown. The Resolute is a good stove for heating up to 1200 sq ft as long as it is truly in good working condition. $450 was its original selling price so it should be in excellent condition.

We can't really get into a lot of specifics without knowing where you live (what sort of heating season you deal with) and, more importantly, as begreen asked above...what are the characteristics of the space to be heated? Rick

Updated the above post with a picture. The Lopi X is probably the most serious heater if it will fit. But during a power outage you will not be able to use the blowers. That's is going to reduce its heating to the immediate area the insert is in.

If it's truly emergency only then I'd think you be better off spending money on a good generator to run the furnace and most of the house. Once you start heating wth wood you will realize how much better the heat is than blowing hot air around with a furnace. Another downfall is making sure the chimey is clean of various junk when you only burn it as an emergency. I would get a good stove and heat with it, or if your set on emergency use only get a generator or a kerosene heater.
