Wood Pellet Prices in Mid-Hudson Valley

Thought I'd do a quick check today around the big box stores for ton pricing in my area (I didn't check for delivery fees). Here's what I came up with, which is pretty much in line with what's happening in the region:

Lowe's Highland, NY - Green Supreme, North American (Massena, NY plant) = $209; Green Team Platinum made in Garards Fort, PA = $250.

Lowe's Kingston, NY - Timber Heat, Instant Heat = $209; Team Green = $250.

Home Depot, Kingston, NY - Green Supreme = $209

Home Depot, Newburgh, NY - Green Supreme = $209

Tractor Supply, Highland, NY -- Appalachian (the bag says hardwood), Instant Heat and Pure Fire = $209

Agway, New Paltz - Warm Front = $259

True Value, New Paltz -- Lignetics = $275

A bit of a drive, Eastern Hay in Danbury selling Hamer's Hot Ones at $305; a delaer in Pawling, NY selling Hamer's at $325.

How do Green Team Platinum's compare with Hamer's or Somerset's?

Lowes has pellets at different prices for different brands?? Never heard of that. The Newburgh store has all brands priced the same, AFAIK.

In any event, the Greene Teams are the best deal there, and are not quite the same heat output of the Hamers or the Somersets, but close.

BTW, keep your eyes peeled at Lowes in the next few weeks.....I have intel that suggests Somersets will be arriving there in the next few weeks.

I know. Different pellets at different prices. Some previous threads are expressing outrage at the distinction since the platinum level Greene Teams reportedly aren't that much hotter.

Spoke with Tom at Hamer's today and says he's working to get a vendor in the area. When his product was being carried at Lowes, it was a loss leader for Lowes because the price to get them nearby exceeded product + trucking expenses. I asked if I could get a group together to buy a truckload, he said no, he dosen't have a retail license and it would be 23 tons. With six people, that's certainly a doable figure.

I may hold a bit since I've got a mixed ton in the shed to hold me over. The cold is coming soon for a bit, they say.

I stopped by this afternoon, but only saw the nasty North American and Greene Supreme pellets on the racks in the garden section. It's possible they were delivered but are still "out back"......I'll check tomorrow if I'm out.

Called this morning, and person said she had the usual but no Sometsets. They may be holding until the other stock gets depleted - which could take a couple of weeks, is my guess.

I though I'd revive this thread. This is my first season with a pellet appliance. I bough it to save money (hey, who did'nt?). Well, Fuel oil can be had for $3.10/gallon. BTU per BTU that figures to pellets at about $360/ton. When I bought the appliance, I figured I'd be paying around $220ish per ton, savings is a no brainer. Last week I went to lowes, they were advertising $240/ton all hardwood. This week..... $350! Page, Williams, $280 and up. Home Depot/ TSC offering a mixed blend that everyone seems to hate $230-$240. Is this just early season gouging?

If it ain't going to be cheaper, I'm burning oild this winter!

The premium pellets are sometimes no or not much better than standard ones. Keep shopping around. With the drop in oil, less pellets will be sold and the price will come down. If you find a brand that burns well in your particular stove, stock up. But make sure they're the ones for you. Also, as the season progresses, different, sometimes hotter burning brands make their way to the stores. So, you might buy an amount for pre-winter and spring usage, a mixed blend.Then get an amount for the winter months. Most pellet people have a stockpile with various amounts. Another tip, there are discount coupons that appear and try to take advantage of those. And, wood is cleaner and renewable resource so it's more than cost savings.
