It kinda looks a little punky, I'm thinking it's red elm.. Hey, if you can get it to dry out, and if it's free and makes you happy, then go for it. But if that wood is really punky inside (spongy), I'd recommend passing on it. That stuff (when it gets wet) will hold the water and render itself useless.

I will cut it and dry it out good. I will see if its any good next year

When I zoomed your picture in, it doesn't look as bad as I thought it did originally. You'll be fine, that should be ready for next fall if you get it split up.....

You very well make as many trips but you'll have much more wood.
 
Now you are talking!!! If that will take you out to 3 years it is perfect or very close to it.

There are several good reasons for using the 3 year wood stack and I think you probably know them.
 
Once the shed goes up it will be so much easier to store. In 2 weeks I will try and start it with a friend. Got to draw it up then get the materials as well.
