I bucked up and made a couple of splits of the next log in the grapple load pile today. I think this one is also in the maple family, but again not sure what type. It is heavy, dense without much aroma. The bark is similar as the first I posted, but the tree is bigger and older. Is the dark color in the center the begining of red rot or characteristic of the species of tree?

Thanks in advance for the input,
Bruce

I think that is Pignut Hickory. The dark center is characteristic of Pignut (and a couple of other trees too). The bark combined with the wide, light sapwood and dark heartwood makes me think Pignut.

That could be a sugar but I've only seen maybe a couple dozen that were that big(14"?) with smooth bark like that. If it tastes sweet like maple sap (go ahead lick it) and has tight rings it very well could be. Usually they look like that from 7-10" and get pretty scaly by 12. Thats what it is.

i agree with wood duck. looks like a hickory.

although, at first glance i thought serviceberry. i'm just unfamiliar with how it looks inside

I think wood duck nailed it. Sure looks like pignut hickory to me.

How'd it smell when you split it? I just did a ton of pignut and it has a distinctive smell. Kinda like when you open a smoker that's cooled down.

Norway Maple

Norway Maple
possibly. The bark looks too light for norway, but I have seen norways with a lot of dark heartwood before. Does the wood smell "starchy"? If so, probably norway....

Yep, one of the best-smelling woods there is IMHO.

That dark color in the center is the heart.

I finished this one up this morning. A couple of more pics to help the decision. It has a very faint smell to it. It's not ofensive either. I do not see any of the destinctive cross grain that "maple" has though. I do remember that the dealer said he did not have much maple in the pile when I ordered it.

Still pignut!

LOL after cutting that i bet it does! Your nowhere close though.;)

You could be right and Im not sure if Ive ever had any pignut but Ive had norway almost every year for the past 20. I found this image from another thread, is this what pignut should look like? I think the pattern on the bark is a little more furrowed.

I rescind my earlier statement, the removed bark scraps dont look like right for a sugar maple they look too soft and flexible.

Maple Family........

hey it's good to see my Pignut picture flout'in around

That irregular-shaped (not round) heartwood in the most recent pics sure looks Maple-y to me...
I've found that when I agree with nrford, I'm usually right. ==c
