Need a Tree ID

Found this one when I was walking back to my truck, it has me stumped.

Book sez Pignut and Shagbark usually have five leaflets on the compound leaf, so I'm guessing it's something else. Shellbark range is in your area, but it says it's uncommon, and is supposed to have orange twigs. Frankly, I'm baffled...
At any rate, it is primo hardwood...remember where it is and grab it when you can.

I take my plus one back.....lol Light wood light colored wood and screams nut tree. I will stick with hickory on this one. Southwest MO your right about that!

Looks like mockernut hickory, leaves have more then 7 to a rachis. Thin spikes on the edges of leaves.

"leaves densely hairy beneath...Twigs brown, stout, hairy, ending in large, hairy bud." That's a bud in the pics, is it not? It appears JOHN BOY has nailed it.
But we still want more pics...

I'm with John Boy. Looks like a mockernut to me. Bark and the 7 leaflets...

Save some of that for cooking on the pit or for the smoker.......love that hickory when it's burning!

Yeah, lookit the bark in that last pic...real similar to Pignut.

Should I drop the small oak it broke the top out of when it fell?

I think you might have a mockernut hickory. Do a google search on MOCKERNUT BUDS and also MOCKERNUT LEAF SCAR. That should confirm it for you.

It makes little sense to leave it.

With the leaves still on it, hard to believe that was punked out...maybe it was dying and that's why it broke off where it did.
Yeah drop that damaged one. Even if it lives, it will never do much and it's just taking resources from better trees that are nearby.
